How will you find the best dog ?

Puppies about 3 wks old. Momma Opel is used to being admired for her good work. Taz is upside-down under the salt and pepper with the white collar.

If you think picking out a dog is as easy as finding someone who has dogs for sale, looking at them, and finding one you like that seems to like you, you would be quite wrong!!!

Do you really want to go out in all weather at 6 am, everyday for the next 12 to 16 years?

Do you want a puppy with all the training and socialization hassles a little one entails?

Might you be happy with an adult who is has finished his or her breeding career and is already trained and socialized?

How do you feel about animal cruelty including docking tails, cutting ears, and pulling out dew claws?

Maybe you would rather rescue an abandoned Mini?

Do you know if your local pet stores offer the same guarantees and certifications that private breeders do?

Have you considered any of these issues?

Penny has weaned her 4 pups, but continues to nurse two adoptees. What a sweetie! And from a champion line, too!

It really doesn't matter what breed you get, all puppies are labor intensive. All members of the household must be prepared to participate. Very young children can make this difficult.

Breeders may retire their dogs from breeding at different ages, but a healthy Miniature Schnauzer's life range is 12 to 16 years, offering quite a lot of years of companionship.

If you do not wish to have your puppy's ears cropped or tail docked, you can let your breeder know. Tail docking occurs in the first days of a dog's life, so the sooner the breeder knows your preference, the better. Ears are typically done about 12 weeks.

Even if you don't have a rescue nearby, sometimes these groups create "underground railroads" to get the animal to you, getting the dog from one area rescue to the next to help defray costs. And it is not unheard of to have an animal shipped via air.

I would not consider getting a dog except from a breeder, so you will have to do your own research on the integrity of your local pet shop. My breeders are experts with many years experience in this specific breed. I know a pet shop cannot offer you the same expertise. Pet stores are about making sales. Breeders are about improving their lines and creating the perfect example of the standard, which in the case of Miniature Schnauzers is an absolutely wonderful and smart family dog.

I got to be part of Taz's (on right) life almost from birth. Eyes had just opened at this point.
